WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (AP) - A central New York man has been charged with stealing more than $46,000 from an account set up on his family’s behalf after his wife was diagnosed with a rare cancer while giving birth to twins this year.

Cayuga County prosecutors say 31-year-old Brandon Hinman of Weedsport was charged this week with grand larceny and criminal possession of a forged instrument for cashing numerous forged checks from late March to May 3.

His wife, 26-year-old Jenna Hinman, died May 5 after a two-month battle with cancer. Her twin daughters were born premature March 3, when doctors discovered she had choriocarcinoma.

The babies are being cared for by Jenna Hinman’s parents.

Brandon Hinman, a former Army soldier posted to Fort Drum, is free on bail. Prosecutors don’t know if he has a lawyer.
