AMSTERDAM (AP) - Lasse Schoene scored twice Sunday as Ajax beat Vitesse Arnhem 4-1 to begin its title defense in the Dutch league.

Vitesse threatened early but goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer made two big saves and Ajax went ahead before halftime through a goal by newcomer Nick Viergever.

Schoene made it 2-0 shortly after halftime, and the result was never in doubt after that.

Other top teams also won their opening matches, with PSV Eindhoven beating Willem II 3-1 in Tilburg after two goals from Dutch World Cup star Memphis Depay. Feyenoord had trouble with ADO The Hague, even though the hosts were down to 10 men after 40 minutes as Mitchell Schet got two yellow cards. Feyenoord striker Mitchell te Vrede headed in the winner from a free kick in injury time.
