JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - One teenager was killed and another injured when the car they were in struck a tree in northern New Jersey.

Authorities tell WABC-TV (https://7ny.tv/1sy8Hyh) that 18-year-old Josue Romero, of Union City, was killed in the crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. Saturday on Route 440 in Jersey City.

Witnesses said the impact caused the car to split apart.

Romero was a passenger in a car driven by 17-year-old Joshua Sanchez, also of Union City, who suffered broken bones in the accident and was being treated at a hospital.

Police say the driver told them another car cut him off, and that he sped up to catch up with that vehicle.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
