HOPE, Ark. (AP) - U.S. Senate, House and gubernatorial candidates were among the many office seekers who gathered in the rain in southwestern Arkansas to take part in the annual Hope Watermelon Festival’s annual Politically Correct Watermelon Eating Contest.

Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor and his Republican challenger - U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton - were joined by gubernatorial candidates Asa Hutchinson and Mike Ross; House candidates Bruce Westerman and James Lee Witt; lieutenant governor candidates John Burkhalter and Tim Griffin; and state attorney general candidates Leslie Rutledge and Nate Steel.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1pJQgX6 ) that Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton won Saturday’s eating contest for the fourth year in a row.
