LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say several people attacked and severely beat a driver whose sport utility vehicle struck and killed a woman on a southern New Jersey roadway.

Lakewood police tell the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1mzU1uu) that 41-year-old township resident Chandra Martin was crossing Route 88 when she was struck around 6:45 p.m. Saturday. She suffered multiple injuries, including head trauma, and later died at a hospital.

The woman’s brother was walking behind her and witnessed the crash, which happened near her home. Several other people who were at the home then allegedly attacked the SUV driver, a 26-year-old Lakewood man.

The man was flown to a trauma center, but further details on his injuries and condition were not disclosed.

No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
