Here’s a look at some key races in the Iowa Senate:

- Democrats will seek to defend incumbents Daryl Beall, of Fort Dodge, Amanda Ragan, from Mason City and Tod Bowman, of Maquoketa. All are in closely divided districts and face challenges.

- Republicans are playing defense for Rick Bertrand, in Sioux City, Julian Garrett, of Indianola and Mark Chelgren, from Ottumwa. Chelgren won his seat in 2010 by just a handful of votes.

- Two open seats are considered competitive. In the 15th District, which includes parts of Polk and Jasper counties, Democrat Chaz Allen, the former mayor of Newtown, is facing Republican Crystal Bruntz, who works for Kum and Go. And in the 39th District, encompassing parts of Washington and Johnson counties, Republican Michael Moore, the CEO of a retirement home, faces Democrat Kevin Kinney, a farmer and deputy sheriff.
