FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The United Way in Fargo is giving away more than 5,000 backpacks to students as part of a back-to-school effort.

WDAY-TV (https://bit.ly/1uCUeSV ) reports part of the backpacks were given this weekend to students enrolled in kindergarten through high school.

A second backpack give away is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Fargodome.

Thomas Hill with the United Way of Cass and Clay counties says the group is trying to make sure that families are ready for school from the start.

The association expects to help more than 3,000 families this year.
