ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - Health officials have issued a high alert for blue-green algae in St. Albans Bay.

The St. Albans Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/1svmd7x) state officials recently observed large amounts of blue-green algae along with dense scum or highly colored waters.

The water is not considered safe for recreational use. Blue-green algae can sometimes release a toxin that can sicken swimmers.

Steve Cushing, president of the St. Albans Watershed Association, calls the conditions “disgusting.” He says if the weather stays warm and calm, he expects the blooms to continue.
