CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The federal government has released a new nautical chart of Charleston Harbor, the first time the chart has been updated in almost 80 years.

The Post and Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1kW5n1a ) the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s new chart provides details on ocean depths and obstructions farther east than on the old chart which was released back in 1936. The new chart also covers an additional 345 square nautical miles.

The new chart is designed to help both recreational boaters and the local harbor pilots who steer large ships through the harbor.

The old chart was also outdated because past harbor deepening projects changed the depth along nine miles of the shipping channel entrance.
