HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Mayor Johnny Dupree presided over swearing-in ceremonies Monday for six new police officers in Hattiesburg.

WDAM-TV reports ( ) their addition to the Police Department brings its staffing up to 116 officers.

The department is authorized for 140 officers.

The new officers will undergo three weeks of refresher training, then an additional month of field training.

Lt. Jon Traxler says all six have previous experience with other police forces, cutting down the usual three months of training required before they could join street patrols.
