ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - An Anderson County sheriff’s deputy is on leave after shooting and wounding a man who threatened him with a knife.

Sheriff John Skipper said in a statement that Deputy Clayton Martin went to a home Monday afternoon to investigate a reported theft.

When Martin returned to the home later in the day to get more information, Skipper says a resident approached the deputy with a knife and refused to put it down. Skipper says Martin fired when the man refused to stop coming toward him.

The sheriff says 31-year-old Mikhail Victor Silver was shot several times and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Skipper says Silver is in critical condition.

As is standard, Martin has been placed on leave while state police investigate. Skipper says he was not hurt.
