ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Zoo is closed after heavy rains and flooding damaged facilities and equipment, including the Arctic Ring of Life exhibit and boilers in other buildings.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak announced that it won’t open to the public Tuesday as it works to assess the extent of the damage and clean up following Monday’s rains. The zoo says all animals are secure and there are no concerns with animal welfare at this time.

The Arctic Ring of Life is a popular attraction at the zoo that includes habitats for polar bears, seals and arctic foxes.

The zoo says workers are beginning cleanup efforts and repairs. The zoo says it expects to reopen for its regular hours on Wednesday.
