PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Expected heavy rain and strong winds have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for northern Rhode Island.

The Weather Service says the watch will be in effect on Wednesday from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. in areas north and west of Providence. Forecasters say they may issue a flash flood watch for the rest of the state later.

The Weather Service says there also is an isolated risk of severe weather in the area Wednesday, including a low probability for a brief tornado.

Forecasters say minor coastal flooding is possible because of higher tides and onshore winds, and a high-surf warning for beaches may be needed.

The Weather Service has issued a small craft advisory for Wednesday for ocean waters and Narragansett Bay.
