MADISON, Ala. (AP) - City and state officials have announced plans to build a retail and entertainment district that’s expected to create about 1,600 new jobs in north Alabama.

Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong tells WAFF-TV (https://bit.ly/1oITknw ) the Town Madison development is expected to transform the area and support local schools and governments through tax revenue.

The 800,000 square foot development is expected to also include office space and hotels.

Madison Mayor Troy Trulock says work to develop the development’s surrounding infrastructure will begin immediately.

Trulock says businesses are already interested in the development because of its proximity to I-565, but local officials need to first improve access to the area.
