De KALB, Texas (AP) - A suspect has been killed and an officer wounded in an exchange of gunfire during a disturbance call at a Northeast Texas home.

Bowie (BOO’-ee) County Sheriff James Prince says a De Kalb (dee-KAWB’) police officer was treated and released after being shot early Monday.

Prince says the officer requested backup as she responded to a disturbance call about a male suspect she knew.

Authorities say the officer was shot in the leg by the suspect as she returned fire. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released. An autopsy has been ordered.

De Kalb police Chief Shawne Walraven says the officer, whose name wasn’t immediately released, has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience.

De Kalb is a town of about 1,900, located 140 miles northeast of Dallas.
