JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A semi-truck driver has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to a crash in northern Illinois last month that claimed five lives.

Francisco Espinal Quiroz of Leesburg, Indiana is accused of falsifying logbooks and failure to maintain proper records. He has been held on $1 million bond since the July 21 accident on Interstate 55 near Channahon.

Will County state’s attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said Tuesday prosecutors have met with Illinois State Police to determine if the charges against the 51-year-old Quiroz should include reckless homicide.

Authorities say Quiroz was driving at least 15 mph above the posted construction zone speed limit at the time of the crash. Defense attorney Sarah Toney on Tuesday offered condolences to crash victims. She said the accident investigation is ongoing for both sides.
