AMITE, La. (AP) - Attendance is up across Tangipahoa Parish public schools according to unofficial numbers released by the school system.

Tangipahoa Schools Chief Academic Officer Theresa Hamilton says on the third day of school last year 20,188 students were attending school. Hamilton says this year 20,261 students have showed up for classes.

Counts for the end of last year were at 19,803.

She says the counts may be slightly higher than the official enrollment, while students add and drop daily.

Hamilton tells The Daily Star (https://bit.ly/1uO1iwh ) attractiveness of the magnet programs are likely part of the explanation for the increased numbers.

The state attendance counts, which help officials determine if they have enough teachers, won’t be taken until Oct. 1.
