BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say one of their officers has been arrested on drug charges.

Department spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says 28-year-old officer Kenneth Padgett is charged with marijuana possession and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Edwards says Padgett was arrested on Monday night.

Edwards says police received a tip that Padgett was involved in illegal drug activity and he was arrested after the department began an internal investigation. Edwards says the internal investigation and the criminal probe are ongoing.

It’s unclear if Padgett has an attorney. A message left at one number listed for Padgett wasn’t immediately returned and a second number listed for him has been disconnected.
