DES PLAINES, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago police department says two semi-automatic rifles that the federal government gave it more than a decade ago are missing.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald (https://bit.ly/1uOLnxK ) reports that the Des Plaines Police Department reported in January that the M-16A1 rifles were missing. It was discovered after the department conducted a weapons inventory required by the Department of Defense for agencies that are supplied surplus military equipment.

Police Chief Bill Kushner says records keeping between 2007 and 2013 was “so muddled and virtually nonexistent” that it has been impossible to determine who used the guns and how they were lost.
