VINALHAVEN, Maine (AP) - The Coast Guard is investigating the death of a fisherman found in the water alongside his empty boat off Vinalhaven Island, Maine.

The Coast Guard said a boater discovered the body in Hurricane Sound and alerted officials at 1:43 p.m. Wednesday. A Maine Marine Patrol vessel transferred the victim to emergency medical personnel who pronounced him deceased.

The Coast Guard, which is investigating, declined to release the victim’s name.

Lt. Scott McCann, Coast Guard spokesman, said it’s unclear what happened. But he said the case underscores the importance of wearing a lifejacket, especially when alone on the water.
