SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Josh Romney is joining Salt Lake City leaders to announce programs designed to combat crime and homelessness in an economically mixed part of the city.

Romney’s real estate office is located near Pioneer Park, where homeless people gather across the street from newly built condos and restaurants. Police responded to more than 400 calls in the area last month.

The son of presidential contender Mitt Romney says the group’s goal is to end homelessness in the city by putting people in housing, then helping them tackle underlying issues like addiction.

Mayor Ralph Becker says crime nearby has increased over the 18 months. A new mall owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has also lured businesses away.
