AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican Dan Patrick and Democrat Leticia Van de Putte still haven’t settled on a first and perhaps only debate in the race for Texas lieutenant governor.

Patrick announced Wednesday that he had agreed to debate his Senate colleague on Sept. 27. But the Van de Putte campaign says they haven’t agreed to that date and that negotiations are ongoing.

Patrick spokesman Alejandro Garcia confirmed that both sides are still trying to work out an agreement. He expressed optimism that voters would get a debate before Election Day.

The winner will replace longtime Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who took office in 2003 but was denied a fourth term by Patrick in a GOP primary runoff.
