CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are accusing a 19-year-old man of pointing a green laser at the pilot of a police helicopter.

Area media outlets report that police said Smith Hayden Brundage is charged with two counts of using a laser device toward an aircraft. Brundage is free on bond, and it’s not known if he has an attorney.

Investigators said the incident took place Tuesday night southeast of the Interstate 485 interchange with Harrisburg Road.

CMPD said it got help from the sheriff’s office in neighboring Cabarrus County in the arrest.

Brundage is facing a felony charge which carries a prison term of up to five years. The federal charge of interfering with the operation of an aircraft carries penalties of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
