CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) - Police from one Pittsburgh suburb are investigating a crash involving the police chief in a neighboring borough.

Moon Township police are trying to determine whether Coraopolis police Chief Alan DeRusso was answering an emergency call with his lights and siren on when witnesses say he allegedly ran a red light with his unmarked car and hit a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman.

Police say DeRusso and the woman have been hospitalized since the wreck with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The crash happened about 8:15 a.m. Thursday at a busy township intersection.

Moon police Chief Leo McCarthy says a main “point of contention” is whether DeRusso was answering a call and whether he’d activated his lights and siren.

McCarthy says police will submit their findings to the Allegheny County district attorney’s office.
