COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - About 600 female students at the University of South Carolina are starting to move into the newly-renovated residence halls known as the Women’s Quad.

University spokeswoman Megan Sexton says the new halls are opening Wednesday for women taking part in sorority recruitment and certain activities such as band. Most students move onto campus this weekend.

The renovation closed the halls near the center of the campus in the 2013 fall semester and cost nearly $30 million. The work merged the McClintock, Wade Hampton and Sims residence halls into a seamless block of dorm space with a central garden.

The new halls feature suite-style arrangements, kitchens, community rooms and a satellite office of the Student Success Center to assist students with their academics.
