HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Veteran state Sen. Eric Coleman has turned back a primary challenge from Hartford City Council President Shawn Wooden.

The Democrats’ battle for the 2nd state senatorial district was one of the most closely watched legislative races in the state.

The 63-year-old Coleman has represented the district since 1995 and is currently the co-chairman of the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee. He previously served in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1994. He lives in Bloomfield.

Coleman announced his re-election plans late and lost the party’s endorsement to Wooden, a 45-year-old Hartford attorney. Wooden argued new blood was needed at the Capitol.

Besides Bloomfield and Hartford, the district also includes Windsor, home of a third candidate, Lenworth Walker.
