MIAMI (AP) - Authorities have fined the father of a 4-year-old boy fatally mauled by family dogs, including a pit bull.

Miami-Dade Animal Services fined Javon Dade Sr. $1,040. Authorities tell The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/XkVW0J ) that the dogs were not properly licensed or up-to-date on their rabies shots. It also is illegal to own a pit bull in Miami-Dade County.

Police say one or more of the family’s six dogs were involved in mauling Javon Dade Jr. on Wednesday. The chief of the county’s shelter operations and animal services enforcement says any dog confirmed as being responsible will be destroyed.

The dogs are currently in the custody of animal services. A county spokeswoman says the dogs were in “fair physical condition,” and animal services had not received any complaints at the family’s address.
