HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco is asking county supervisors for a $950,000 increase in the department’s budget for the coming fiscal year so more deputies can be hired and the department can buy 19 vehicles.

The department hopes to add several officers, including four for patrol shifts and one for the aviation unit.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1utf1eA) the supervisors must approve a budget by Sept. 15.

The proposed county budget of $112.5 million is a decrease of about 2.37 percent from fiscal 2014.

The sheriff’s requests came during the first of a series of supervisor budget workshops. The county’s next fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2015.

Rasco says the vehicles would replace aging cars that have more than 170,000 miles on them.
