CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A former federal prison guard and his wife have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, admitting they took bribes from an inmate’s family in return for providing the inmate with tobacco and other contraband.

Joel and Liza Gonzalez entered their pleas on Thursday before a federal magistrate in Corpus Christi. Gonzalez was a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Three Rivers. He admitted that he arranged to smuggle contraband to a prison inmate in return for cash payments from December 2012 through last April. Lisa Gonzalez admitted helping arrange times and places for receiving the contraband and bribe payments from the inmate’s family.

Both could get up to five years in federal prison when they’re sentenced Nov. 19 but may remain free on bond until then.
