PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former clerk at the Woonsocket Municipal Court has pleaded no contest to embezzling nearly $390,000 from the city over six years and faces an 18-month prison term.

Sixty-five-year-old Rachel Arruda entered the plea Wednesday in Providence Superior Court. She’s set to be sentenced on Sept. 10. The plea deal also calls for her to pay $60,000 in restitution.

Authorities say Arruda worked for the city for three decades. Police say she stole the money from 2004 until she retired in 2010.

A judge denied a request by Arruda’s lawyer, Mark Smith, to have her serve home confinement instead of prison.

The Woonsocket Call reports that Smith said his client stole the money because of unspecified family struggles.
