FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) - One of the Army combat brigades based at Fort Drum in northern New York is deactivating as part of Pentagon reductions announced last year.

Officials at Fort Drum say soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team will case their colors during an inactivation ceremony being held Thursday morning at Sexton Field.

The brigade was activated 10 years ago next month and deployed four times to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The base will lose 1,500 soldiers with the 3rd Brigade’s deactivation, but others are being transferred to the division’s 1st Brigade and 2nd Brigade Combat Teams at Fort Drum.

In June 2013, military officials announced that 10 Army brigades would be deactivated as part of the Army’s reductions in soldiers and units.
