HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Hilton Head Island man is recovering after he was attacked by a rabid raccoon which he then killed.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (https://bit.ly/1kDBLVJ ) that a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department report says the attack happened Aug. 6 when the 67-year-old man was walking back from a dock in Sea Pines Plantation.

The report says the raccoon lunged at the man and when he fell down trying to run away, the animal bit his leg. The man said he choked the raccoon to death. It later was found to be positive for rabies.

The man did not want to be identified but says he’s recovering after getting medical treatment.
