PHOENIX (AP) - A Tempe man has been convicted of manslaughter in the stabbing death of a Scottsdale nightclub bouncer who was a former Arizona State University football player.

Maricopa County prosecutors say a jury returned its verdict Thursday against 27-year-old Ian Alexander MacDonald. They say the aggravation phase of the trial will begin Aug. 25.

MacDonald was accused of killing Tyrice Thompson outside the Martini Ranch nightclub in January 2013.

Prosecutors say MacDonald stabbed Thompson five times in the back, hip and arm after a fight. Thompson died several days later.

MacDonald pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Thompson played tight end and receiver for the Sun Devils from 2003 to 2007.

He later was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indianapolis Colts, but never played in an NFL game.
