PHOENIX (AP) - A man who fled to Mexico after a 2004 shooting west of Phoenix now is in custody.

Authorities say 28-year-old Juan Carlos Mendoza was taken into custody Wednesday by state and federal officers at a home in Surprise.

Surprise police say investigators sought Mendoza on grand jury warrants for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault involving a firearm.

Mendoza was accused of shooting a victim several times during an altercation on Dec. 27, 2004 in Surprise.

Details of the case weren’t immediately available Thursday.

Mendoza fled to Mexico shortly after the shooting, but authorities learned he returned in March to the United States using a fake name.

It’s unclear if Mendoza has an attorney yet.
