PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) - Picayune elected officials say that because of lagging tax collections, they won’t approve requests by the police and fire departments to hire more employees.

The Picayune Item reports (https://bit.ly/1paZAnG ) that the mayor and council members are holding public hearings to work on a city budget for the year that starts Oct. 1.

Mayor Ed Pinero Jr. says police patrol levels should not be reduced, even with officials denying the request for new employees.

Officials also said they’re turning down requests for more money for the Parks and Recreation Department and the city airport.
