PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say a Pittsfield man helping to paint a friend’s barn has died after falling about 25 feet.

The Pittsfield Fire Department identified the victim as Peter E. Bell, a former director of the city’s Boys & Girls Club and a coach of area youth sports teams.

The Berkshire Eagle (https://bit.ly/1uwxjvr ) reports that Bell was reportedly conscious and having trouble breathing as first responders prepared him for transport to Berkshire Medical Center.

Witnesses told the fire department that a loose nail hammered into a board Bell had thrown from the second-story barn door caught his clothing and pulled him out.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
