NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s press secretary has been re-assigned to handle public information for the police department following news that the department failed to issue a statement on an officer-involved shooting.

The city said Thursday that Tyler Gamble will manage the three-person police public information staff, filling a post vacant since April.

Police Chief Ronal Serpas said this week he had approved a news release hours after Monday’s shooting by police officer Lisa Lewis, but it was never distributed.

The shooting, made after a traffic stop, wasn’t made public for two days. The attorney for 26-year-old Armand Bennett says Bennett suffered a serious graze wound to the head in the shooting.

Serpas said the shooting is being investigated.

Police said Bennett faced warrants for charges including illegal weapon possession.
