ISTANBUL (AP) - Hundreds of football fans have attended the funeral of the former chairman of Turkish club Besiktas, who died in Istanbul, aged 88.

Suleyman Seba, a former player, who chaired Besiktas for 16 years from 1984 to 2000, died on Wednesday. A respected figure, he remained the club’s honorary chairman after his retirement.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Friday joined Besiktas fans and mourners from rival clubs in paying their respects to Seba at his funeral in Istanbul.

“He managed to bring people from every club here today. He taught us love, respect and duty. He showed us how to display fair play in treating rivals. He was exemplary,” Gul said.
