DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Republican State Rep. Henry Rayhons was arrested Friday on charges of sexual abuse, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

According to the police affidavit, Rayhons, 78, of Garner, had sexual contact with the resident of a care center who was not able to give consent. Department spokesman Alex Murphy confirmed that the victim was Rayhons’ wife, Donna Rayhons, who died last week.

The affidavit said that Rayhons had been informed that his wife lacked the cognitive ability to consent. But her roommate at the center heard noises May 23 that indicated the couple was having sexual contact, and surveillance video showed that Rayhons entered the room that evening, the document said.

Rayhons later confirmed the sexual contact to the police. He was taken to the Hancock County jail Friday and was later released on bail.

Rayhons represents the 8th District in the state House, which covers part of north central Iowa. He won the GOP nomination to seek re-election in the June primary, but withdrew from the race several weeks ago.

Telephone messages left at Rayhons’ home and for his attorney were not immediately returned.

A spokeswoman for Republican House Speaker Kraig Paulsen said he would have no comment.
