PLOVER, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin prosecutors have filed attempted homicide charges against a man they say attacked a police officer with a knife during a traffic stop.

Stevens Point Journal Media reports (https://spjour.nl/1kGrE2z ) prosecutors said Thursday that 33-year-old Brett Lieberman of Manawa ran toward Plover Police Officer Andrew Hopfensperger’s squad car on Friday.

Plover’s police chief says Hopfensperger shot Lieberman to stop the attack.

A police captain says Lieberman remained hospitalized late Thursday. He says he doesn’t know Lieberman’s condition. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Hopfensperger will remain on administrative leave until Plover police and the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation complete reviews of the shooting.
