DOVER, Del. (AP) - Joseph T. Walsh, a retired justice who served more than 17 years on the Delaware Supreme Court, has died. He was 84.

Walsh’s son Kevin said his father died Friday morning at Christiana Hospital in Newark after a battle with cancer.

Walsh, who received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1954, was appointed a Superior Court judge in 1972.

Walsh became a Chancery Court judge in 1984, serving only a year before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 1985. He retired in 2003.

Walsh is survived by his wife, Madeline, six children, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass is planned for next week at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in Greenville, with Bishop Francis Malooly of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington presiding.
