BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A 28-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the fatal shooting of a Buffalo teenager and the wounding of three others during a fight.

The Buffalo News reports (https://bit.ly/1pwODgx ) that Joseph Grant was arraigned Thursday in Buffalo City Court on second-degree murder and assault charges.

Police say he was acting as a “referee” in a fight that broke out Tuesday between two girls at a housing project on the city’s east side. Officials say Grant then got into a fight with another man.

During the tussle, police say Grant pulled out a handgun and began firing. The bullets hit a group of teenage boys who were fleeing over a nearby pedestrian bridge spanning Route 33.

Fourteen-year-old Raymond Floyd Patterson III was killed. A 16-year-old boy and two 13-year-old boys, including Raymond’s brother, were wounded.
