LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Texas man has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for trying to extort $2,000 from a man involved in an extramarital affair.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albuquerque says 37-year-old Steven Manuel White of Burkburnett, Texas, was sentenced in Las Cruces Thursday for violating the Hobbs Act by extorting money with threats of violence. He was also ordered to pay back the $2,000.

White and a 30-year-old Roswell woman, Stacy Renee Campbell, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges they extorted the money by sending text messages threatening to disclose the victim’s affair with Campbell. The victim transferred the money from Roswell to the defendants in Wichita Falls, Texas. White then attempted to get another $2,000, but the victim’s wife called to say she knew of the affair. White responded with death threats.
