GLENDALE, Wis. (AP) - Nicolet High School in Glendale announced this week that its varsity football season will be cancelled due to low participation.

Kirk Krychowiak, the athletic director, said the school is looking for a way to allow senior athletes to play this season. He said he’s not sure how the situation might affect the teams Nicolet was scheduled to play.

The junior varsity and freshmen programs won’t be affected.

Krychowiak said he is optimistic that the varsity team will make a comeback, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1t3Zoq2 ) reported.

“We have started efforts to improve our football program moving forward to ensure that students will have the opportunity to play in the future,” he said in the statement. “Plans are already in place to upgrade the school’s athletic facilities, for football in particular, which is sorely needed to improve the quality of the program and student participation.”

The Nicolet Knights had a 0-9 record last season. The team hasn’t made it to the playoffs since 1989.
