BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A judge has dramatically increased bail for a man accused of gunning down a Burlington bicyclist earlier this month.

The Burlington Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/1m5tnd9 ) that bail for 38-year-old Joshua Royer, of Burlington, was increased to $1 million on Friday. He had been held on $200,000 bail.

The increase came after a prosecutor filed formal court papers in Des Moines County District Court charging Royer with first-degree murder. Police say Royer shot 50-year-old Eddie Martin Cooper multiple times on the afternoon of Aug. 6 as Cooper was riding his bike.

Investigators have said it doesn’t appear Martin and Royer knew each other. Authorities have declined to discuss a motive for the killing.
