LAKEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was in critical condition Saturday after being assaulted as he responded to a fight at a shopping mall.

The incident happened Friday night at a mall in Lakewood, where a man and woman were fighting.

According to the sheriff’s office, as the deputy escorted the man away, he hit the deputy on the back of the head and kicked him while he was on the ground.

A bystander pushed the alleged assailant, identified as 21-year-old Frankie Estrada, away. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and held on $1 million bail.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical but stable condition.
