DENVER (AP) - A jury has convicted a 25-year-old man of robbing and killing a man at an apartment complex in Aurora.

The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/1uFiVku ) James Mercedes Fennell was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder in the Nov. 3, 2010, shooting death of 28-year-old Juan Miranda-Hernandez. Prosecutors say Fennell pistol-whipped Miranda-Hernandez in the victim’s home before shooting him in the back.

The slaying happened shortly before Miranda-Hernandez was to be married.

Investigators collected a human hair from the rear sight of Fennell’s revolver that was linked to Miranda-Hernandez. Michelle Yi, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, says the case was the first taken to trial by the office’s newly established Cold Case Unit.

Fennell is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 16.
