MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A massive power outage in downtown Memphis shut down Beale Street for about five hours.

The Friday night outage lasted from about 8:45 p.m. until 2 a.m. Saturday. Memphis utility officials told The Commercial Appeal (https://bit.ly/1lapdWC ) a problem at a substation caused the outage, but has since been fixed.

Police set up squad cars and other light sources to help penetrate the darkness.

Utility company officials heard that Memphis Police Department was responding to fires around manhole covers.

Officials say there was no gas leak, and MLGW crews had to clear the air underground so workers could get underground investigate the problem.
