SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Sioux Falls School District officials say they’re still short bus drivers with only days before the school year begins.

The Argus Leader reports (https://argusne.ws/1oZcBkM ) the district is still lacking six drivers. It needs an additional four drivers in case employees call in sick. The school year in Sioux Falls starts Monday.

School Bus Inc. Manager Jim Shafer says a mild shortage is a perennial issue. But Shafer says the problem this year is particularly acute because the district added a new middle and expanded its attendance boundaries.

Students will attend George McGovern Middle School for the first time Monday.

The company has turned to mechanics and office employees to cover some routes when they haven’t had enough drivers to meet the district’s needs.
