ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A judge has ordered a competency trial for a man charged with shooting a deputy outside the Athens-Clarke County courthouse two years ago.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1BnXiqC ) 28-year-old Larry Lavelle Henderson is scheduled to appear Friday before a Superior Court judge to determine if he’s mentally capable to stand trial on aggravated assault charges. Henderson’s defense attorney says he suffers from “some mental or psychological infirmity.”

In June 2012, Henderson’s mother drove him to the courthouse while trying to have her son committed to a mental hospital. A deputy shot Henderson with a taster when he refused to leave the car, and authorities say Henderson responded by opening fire with a handgun. A bullet struck Cpl. J.T. Williams in the leg, but he survived the shooting.
